Regional Livestock Production Systems

Regional Livestock Production Systems

The combination of existing climatic conditions and impact of the crisis have left many of the livestock populations in this region undernourished and untreated for disease. Not only has the ongoing drought wiped out range vegetation and crop yields, already vulnerable nomadic pastoral families are being forced further into debt by having to sell their animals and assets at substantially depressed rates in order to salvage an income.

The recovery period, assuming regular rainfall is restored, could span several seasons before the fractured livelihoods of these nomadic populations are repaired. It is therefore imperative that monitoring and analysis are performed on a regular basis to support relief efforts and develop early warning systems in preparation for the challenges faced ahead.
