In February, monthly precipitation was close to the long-term average (LTA) of the past 16 years in most parts of Jordan, except for the agricultural areas of Irbid, Ajloun, Jerash and Al-Balqa governorates, where rainfall totals were below average. However, monthly rainfall levels in these governorates were higher compared to the levels during the same month of last year.
ASI for February shows healthy vegetation cover across the above-mentioned governorates. Gradual vegetation improvements across three dekads of the month can also be depicted in Al- Karak governorate in central Jordan. Winter crops grown during this period include barley and spring wheat, which are due to be harvested in May-June 2017. These crops are mainly (90%) grown in rain-fed northern and central areas of higher elevation.
Please note that since the ASI is based on remotely sensed data only, there is no confirmation on what crops have been planted.
