Agricultural Stress Index in Syria - December 2016

As can be seen from the ASI for December 2016, planting is still ongoing for winter crops (mainly barley, wheat and winter vegetables), and signs of healthy growth continue to be seen in northwest Syria, and the coastal areas. November and December have seen signs of good crop growth in the southern governorates. As mentioned in the previous months, though northern and southern parts of Syria have received relatively good rains, it is still much too early to see what the impact will be on crop development. Most likely conflict, timely access to and quality of agricultural inputs, access to arable land will have a greater impact in the coming months. In the northern governorates, some winter vegetable were showing signs of frostbite however not much damage is expected due to the short duration of the frost period. Please note that since the ASI is based on Remotely Sensed data only, there is no confirmation on what crops have been planted.
