The ASI for Iraq for November, 2016, as per the previous month, shows that no planting has occurred in the northern parts of Dohuk, Erbil, Salahmiyah, Kirkuk and Ninewa and fields are still most likely being prepared for planting. Rainfall was relatively good (75-100mm) in the northern parts of the country, more so, extreme north of Erbil and Sulahmiyah governorates. These areas are traditionally the breadbasket of Iraq, and planting of wheat and barley occurs in December with growth normally seen in January.
There has been expansion of crop growth in the central areas with planting having occurred during November. These areas are also showing an early improvement when compared to October. Dryness has reduced a little in several locations of the entire country during November, which was due to some rainfall (up to 5 mm across the country).
Please note that since the ASI is based on Remotely Sensed data only, there is no confirmation on what crops have been planted.
